Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

What is Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy?

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) is a method of treating perforators and painful, large varicose veins. Under ultrasound guidance, a small needle is inserted directly into the vein and a foaming solution (FDA approved sodium tetradecyl) is injected. The chemical solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to swell and stick together.

The procedure generally takes about 15 minutes to perform. UGS is typically performed following Radiofrequency Ablation treatments to obliterate the remaining accessory veins. Multiple sessions are usually required since there is a maximal dosage of the foaming medication allowed per visit. Sessions need to be a minimum of 2 weeks apart.

After the procedure:

Compression stockings should be worn during the treatment period. You may return to your normal daily activities immediately after the procedure. You may experience soreness, tenderness or bumps under the surface of the skin. Any minor soreness can be effectively treated with over the counter pain medications.

One week after your treatment, you will return for a limited ultrasound at no additional charge to evaluate the effectiveness of the sclerotherapy treatment. During that ultrasound, the need for additional treatments will be assessed and additional treatments will be scheduled as needed.
